Acts: The Spread of the Gospel
This study is taken from John MacArthur's "Acts: The Spread of the Gospel." My prayer and goal for this devo is that we will learn more about how the early church laid the foundation for what we possess today, and that we would allow God to use us to turn our world upside for Him!
This will be an exciting journey, so encourage others to join you! I'm looking forward to the interaction we will have on this blog as we study the book of Acts!
The devos will differ in format from day to day, but two things are constant: 1) a daily reading, and 2) additional Scripture passages that are in bold. Be sure to read any and all of the readings/bold verses that appear so that you can see the full picture of what is taught that day.
Remember, you can access any of the previous devos that have been posted from the "Blog Archive" section on the left side of this page.

Joseph's Family Album - A Snapshot of Joseph's Brother: Judah - Devo for 08/23/08
Genesis 38:1-30
Thought
Joseph's older brother, Judah, really blew his testimony in his teen years and early twenties. Even though Joseph and Judah lived at the same time with the same father and knew about the same God, they made very different choices in regards to personal separation. Read the entire chapter of Genesis 38. It is interesting that God put this dark chapter right between chapter 37 where Joseph was bought by Potiphar and chapter 39 where Joseph was tempted by Mrs. Potiphar.
Questions
1. Give two possible reason why God placed this chapter where He did.
* Hint 1 - Compare the way Jospeh and Judah handled temptation.
* Hint 2 - God's people were about to mix in with the Canaanite people.
2. Even as a young teen, Judah did not seem content to follow Jehovah, the God of his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. How old do you think Judah was at the beginning of chapter 38?

questions:
1.so we could see that if you o wrong judgement will come upon you.
2.just wanting to do his own thing.
questions
1.maybe so we knew that they went through trials to and it wasnt all perfect in that life.and they will get punished with judgement just like we will.
2.probably like early twenties or late teens.
Good job Taylor Foltz! I go back and read all the posts from previos dates. It is encouraging to see how God is working in everyone's lives...I also go back so I can keep track of who is doing their devos...the Fall Retreat will be here before you know it!
1. Well maybe to just see that you have to go through a tough time in order to see how God is working in your life.
2. Peobley 17-25
Sorry Jason but i forgot that there was more that 1 bekah in the teen group now so i will start doing bekah merrell ok
1. so you can see that judgment will come to you
2. early 20s
1. Possibly to compare the way the two men handled the temptation...to show how sin can hurt many people.
2. I am guessing a young age...18ish.
1. As a comparison....Joseph fled temptation and did right, while Judah gave in to temptation without apparently giving it a second thought. Joseph knew that to give in would be direct sin against God. Judah's sin was against God...it wasn't a sweet love story, as it would probably be portrayed today if Hollywood made a movie of it.
2. I don't know. Sorry!
1.i think maybe cause God wanted to show us that everyone goes through problems and when you do the wrong thing God can punish you.
2.i don't even have a guess, sorry
1. God showed the contrast between Joseph and his brother, Judah. They were faced with the same temptation, yet Judah yielded, and Joseph held true.
2. Probably 19 or 20...I've never actually thought about it.
(Sorry, I forgot to put my name on the previous post.)

1. He put it there to show that we need to learn to handle temptation like joseph.
2. I'm not sure maybe around 20.
