Acts: The Spread of the Gospel

This study is taken from John MacArthur's "Acts: The Spread of the Gospel." My prayer and goal for this devo is that we will learn more about how the early church laid the foundation for what we possess today, and that we would allow God to use us to turn our world upside for Him!

This will be an exciting journey, so encourage others to join you! I'm looking forward to the interaction we will have on this blog as we study the book of Acts!

The devos will differ in format from day to day, but two things are constant: 1) a daily reading, and 2) additional Scripture passages that are in bold. Be sure to read any and all of the readings/bold verses that appear so that you can see the full picture of what is taught that day.

Remember, you can access any of the previous devos that have been posted from the "Blog Archive" section on the left side of this page.

Reflective Questions
1. Think of a painful experience in your life. How did God help you during that time of struggle?

My recovery from losing my leg was difficult, but the Word, my family, friends, and definitely NTBC helped me through that time.

2. Who do you turn to first when you are in sorrow or pain? How does that person comfort you?

I turn to my wife. She reminds me of the Scriptures, prays with me, and encourges me to seek the Lord.

Responsive Questions
1. It is obvious that the disciples are confused and concerned about Jesus' statements (vv. 16-18). Why do you think they are so upset?

I think they were upset because they could not grasp what Christ was saying...about His leaving, about where He was going, or when He was coming back.

2. Jesus answers their questions not by giving them an explanation but by making them a promise (vv. 19-22). What is the promise?

He promises that He will come back and that He will give them joy that no man can replace.

3. Why would it bring them joy in the middle of their grief and confusion?

Because it will be a confirmation that everything He has told them is true.

4. How can this incident help us when our questions to the Lord seemingly go unanswered?

It is a reminder to us that even when we do not understand, God's Word is still true and His presence will always be with us.

2. Jason is definitely person #1. I have to be careful, though, because sometimes I'll go to Jason before I even go to the Lord with my sorrow or pain.

RESPONSIVE QUESTIONS
1. This was definitely not what they were expecting. They were already dreaming of ruling with Him in His Messianic kingdom.
2. You will see me soon, and you will have joy!
3. Because they would one day see Jesus again.
4. That He has something better that He is bringing about...that it will be so much better than where I'm at right now.
