Acts: The Spread of the Gospel

This study is taken from John MacArthur's "Acts: The Spread of the Gospel." My prayer and goal for this devo is that we will learn more about how the early church laid the foundation for what we possess today, and that we would allow God to use us to turn our world upside for Him!

This will be an exciting journey, so encourage others to join you! I'm looking forward to the interaction we will have on this blog as we study the book of Acts!

The devos will differ in format from day to day, but two things are constant: 1) a daily reading, and 2) additional Scripture passages that are in bold. Be sure to read any and all of the readings/bold verses that appear so that you can see the full picture of what is taught that day.

Remember, you can access any of the previous devos that have been posted from the "Blog Archive" section on the left side of this page.

1. Why do you think Jesus "had to go through Samaria" on his way to Galilee (v. 4)? (Jewish people normally went around Samaria to avoid contact with the despised Samaritans.)

because Jesus came to save those in the world not just Jews.
He needed to connect with all kinds of people not just one group.

2. Jesus' words surprise the Samaritan woman (v. 9). What present-day situations might arouse the same racial, religious and sexual prejudices?

Divorce and re-marriage. living with your boy friend or girlfriend before marriage.

3. How does Jesus' offer of "living water" contrast with what the woman thinks he means (vv. 10-15)?

-This may sound really weird.I was at the dentist's office talking to the doctor about school, and we started talking about what church we go to.
-It is usually people that I know at school, but are I'm not really close with.I'm not as hesitant with people I don't know or those I know really well.

1.It was the most logical way as far time goes. Also, Jesus was there to set an example.Jews didn't talk to Samaritans and Christ wanted to show that everyone is given the opportunity to know Him.
2.People that are of different faiths,or like the woman, someone who did not have the same morals or standards
3.She thought that He was referring to physical water, which will run out and not completely quench.Christ was offering something that would never run out and cover all that we have done.
4.To me, this means that I will never have to search for anything to comepletely fulfill me in life again.Christ's "water" is enough to cover all of my sin and give me eternal life.

4. What does this offer of "living water" mean in your life and experience?
That our salvation can never be taken away. Also, that Jesus is the only one who can give it, we can be saved only through him.

Reflective..
1. When I was talking to someone about a difficult time or trial in my life and was able to share how God was my strength.

2. Probably those that I know but do not know really well. I think once I get to know someone..they pretty much know that I am a Christian (because I have told them). If it is just an aquaintance..the topic may not have come up and I feel uncomfortable just bringing it up in a 5 minute conversation. (An example would be other parents at Megan's gym or Brooke and Allie's soccer games).

Responsive

1. He saw a need to share salvation with the Samaritan woman.

2. This can be related to any two groups of differing morals and beliefs...such as Mormans/Scientologists/Jehovah Witnesses...etc. Also I think an example would be people of a different "class". I think one of the men that stand on the street corner begging for money would be shocked if some big wig CEO asked him to lunch, or sat on the corner with him or invited him to his home.

3. She thinks he means the actual water in the well.

4. That we have salvation and that God provides all of our needs..no matter who we are.

Gerson...we missed you at church last night! Have you encouraged your sister to "blog"?

See most of you at the game tomorrow night!

No big news to talk about today, sorry lol.

Reflective-------------------------
Answer to 1.
It happens once in awhile, the most popular topic that gets talked about is the Rapture.

Answer to 2.
Um, probably just strangers, you never know what they'll say or do if you start turning a conversation into a christian perspective.

Responsive-------------------------
Answer to 1.
He wasnt scared like all the other Jewish people. He confronted the white elephant, but besides, if he hadnt gone through Samaria, he would've never gotten to talk to the woman at the well.

Answer to 2.
Something racial that would not be allowed would be like some kids that are a certain color beating up on other kids of a different certain color. And as other people have said for the sexual arousment would be sex before/outside marriage and/or living with someone before marriage.

Answer to 3.
Jesus is talking about everlasting life with him in heaven and she thinks he is talking about drinking water.

Answer to 4.
It means absolutely everything to Christians. Without it, we wouldnt got to heaven.

Reflective Questions:
1. Have had an opportunity at Chick-Fil-A a time or two. Need to take the opportunties more...

2. Some of the people who help us with Sheryl...don't want to "make them mad" and them not want to work with us anymore. How dumb is that? What better friend can I be than to share Jesus with them?

Responsive Questions
1. He knew God the Father was ready to do a work there.
2. Talking to, interacting with homosexuals by Christians is unexpected these days...they think we all hate them, and we often think they hate us too.
3. By living water, Jesus referred to eternal life. The completion that life lived in Jesus Christ can bring. She was referring to well water. Quenches your thirst only so much. Nothing long term.
4. Well, I'm thirsty right now...so I'm wanting some of what the woman thought she was giving Jesus. But I am sooooo glad Jesus made a way for us to have eternal life. Otherwise...this would be a very hopeless life. I'd either be trying to frantically be good enough to gain eternal life, or would just give up and wreck my life. God's way is much better!

Reflective Questions
1. When have you been able to turn an ordinary conversation into a discussion about Jesus?

I had an opportunity this week to direct a conversation with a friend in a spiritually uplifting direction.

2. Who are you afraid or reluctant to talk with about Jesus? What factors make you hesitant?

Honestly, I am not afraid to share my faith with anyone, however, I notice it takes more courage to do it with my family members.

Responsive Questions
1. Why do you think Jesus "had to go through Samaria" on his way to Galilee (v. 4)? (Jewish people normally went around Samaria to avoid contact with the despised Samaritans.)

I think he needed to go through Samaria for two reasons, 1) there was a woman there that needed salvation, along with the others that trusted in Him while He was there, and 2) He was displaying to His disciples (and to us through inspiration of the Scriptures) that just because the world has its prejudices doesn’t mean we have to abide by them.

2. Jesus' words surprise the Samaritan woman (v. 9). What present-day situations might arouse the same racial, religious and sexual prejudices?

Our godly interaction with those who have been divorced, those who are living in immorality (homosexuality, living together before marriage, etc.), or those who have a different belief system are some present-day examples.

3. How does Jesus' offer of "living water" contrast with what the woman thinks he means (vv. 10-15)?

She was thinking of the material – the water and the well that she could see. She did not realize that Jesus was speaking of a spiritual thirst, that only He (the well) could quench (with the living water).

4. What does this offer of "living water" mean in your life and experience?

It means that I can rely on Jesus Christ as my never-ending source of spiritual refreshment, not just for eternity, but also for every day of my life until I enter eternity.
