Acts: The Spread of the Gospel

This study is taken from John MacArthur's "Acts: The Spread of the Gospel." My prayer and goal for this devo is that we will learn more about how the early church laid the foundation for what we possess today, and that we would allow God to use us to turn our world upside for Him!

This will be an exciting journey, so encourage others to join you! I'm looking forward to the interaction we will have on this blog as we study the book of Acts!

The devos will differ in format from day to day, but two things are constant: 1) a daily reading, and 2) additional Scripture passages that are in bold. Be sure to read any and all of the readings/bold verses that appear so that you can see the full picture of what is taught that day.

Remember, you can access any of the previous devos that have been posted from the "Blog Archive" section on the left side of this page.

Shine, Jesus, Shine - Part 3 - Devo for 05/28/08

Reading
John 8:48-59

Responsive Questions
1. What is it about Jesus' statements that makes his enemies want to stone him (vv.48-59)?
2. Summarize the various attacks voiced against Jesus in this chapter, and explain how Jesus' example will help you face spiritually hostile people.
3. In what ways does your lifestyle validate (or invalidate) your claim to be a follower of Jesus?

Applying Chapter 8 in Your Life
1. What are ways to prepare yourself for objections that you will face while sharing your faith?
2. What are some biblical teachings/truths that you feel unequipped to explain to someone else?

I want to challenge you over the course of this summer to spend time studying those areas you feel weak in explaining to others. Get a concordance and study the Bible, check out books from the church library, or ask one of the pastors for help with these areas. It will strengthen your faith and further equip you to serve Him!

1. That Jesus said he had seen Abraham even though he had died before Jesus was born. They thought He was lying.

2. They continually thought Jesus was fake and a liar, but Jesus continued to proclaim the truth and what was right. Sometimes it is hard to continually defend yourself and your faith, but that is what Jesus did. He never gave in.

3. I would hope by the choices I make (although not all of them) that I chose to do what is right and what the Lord would have me to do. I think by being faithful to devo's, prayer, church and other areas in our life, we can show that we are followers of Christ.

Applying

1. Be bathed in prayer when you know you are going to witness, especially if you think it will be confrontational. Know what you share and how to back it up in the Bible.
2. I always get confused on the history...also those areas like marriage after divorce, standards, and gray areas.

I feel so awful about not getting to post for about a week. I haven't had access to a computer with internet on it. I do again though. =)

Responsive Questions
1. Jesus said he was greater than Abraham but not of His own account. He was greater because His Father, God, said He is greater. He also said that before Abraham was, He was.
2. Jesus answered softly but very to His point. He explained that He was just doing what God wanted Him to. We can take what He did and pattern ourselves after Him.
3. People see in my life that I attend church, and that shows them that I have at least some belief in God. Reading my Bible is another way that people can see my faith. Prayer is a testimony to my faith in Christ too. Just how I act and conduct myself would show that I follow Jesus.

Applying Chapter 8 in Your Life
1. Study your Bible to specifically oppose the objections people often use. Know Scripture passages that will come to your memory when asked about something.
2. Election.

Answer to 2.
Jesus is an example for talking with the unsaved, although this instance might not be the best example because they started throwing stones at him,but we can follow Jesus' example by not disrespecting the unsaved and hearing what they have to say, but giving Bible verses to support your claims.

Responsive Questions
1. What is it about Jesus' statements that makes his enemies want to stone him (vv.48-59)?

They wanted to stone Him because He claimed that He was the I AM. He said He lived before Abraham and whoever believes in Him will not see death.

2. Summarize the various attacks voiced against Jesus in this chapter, and explain how Jesus' example will help you face spiritually hostile people.

They called Him a liar, questioned His purpose, and told Him that He was possessed. Yet Jesus continued to give them truth. The example for us is not to retaliate against their attacks, but to firmly stand our ground on God's truth.

3. In what ways does your lifestyle validate (or invalidate) your claim to be a follower of Jesus?

I am trusting in only Christ for my salvation...I love other believers...I love studying God's Word and praying...there is conviction when I sin...I strive to live according to God's Word.

Applying Chapter 8 in Your Life
1. What are ways to prepare yourself for objections that you will face while sharing your faith?

Study the Bible...know the truth so well that you recognize error when you hear it.

2. What are some biblical teachings/truths that you feel unequipped to explain to someone else?

I struggle with end time events (eschatology) and how that all plays out with the nation of Israel.

Responsive Questions
1. He makes Himself equal with God.
2. They basically question His deity, they question His heritage, they question His claims to pretty much everything! Jesus kept going back to the truth, and to be honest, He didn't argue non-stop with them. He didn't force them to believe Him. He let them choose.
3. Everytime I choose to believe Christ over my own feelings, I am validating my claim to be His follower. (Hebrews says that if we are going to please God, we must "believe that He is." When I chose to believe Him as my Savior, instead of trying to earn my own way to Heaven...I became a spritual child of Abraham...a follower of the Savior.

Applying Chapter 8 in My Life
1. Know Christ better...know His Word so that I can respond biblically.
2. I need to give some thought to this one...I was puzzling over one the other day, but I didn't write it down, so I can't recall it at the moment, but it will come to me eventually!
